Improving profitability in steel fixing work
Now with PTVPL moving in the entire scenario was looking quite different. No longer were the workers to be hired by Mistrys who were themselves illiterate and owed their positions due to muscle power or local political clout, which led to their having a hold over a large segment of youth back in their villages. These casual labourers that the Mistrys brought to the site were as flippant as the Mistrys and were at their mercy back in their villages and also were dependent on the Mistrys for getting them alternate employment. So these casual labourers never developed an instinct or inclination to learn more on their jobs, perform better and grow with the Compay where they worked. For them it was a temporary employment and they wanted to make hay while the sun shone.
On the other hand PTVPL promised a regular supply of trained workforce that would have long term interests in the organization they worked for, they would grow with the organization and contribute productively to the organization by learning new things. In this journey, PTVPL would give initial training of one month, and after that would also give regular intermittent training and review their performance on an ongoing basis.
Jaipal decided to try out this new venture, as he had nothing to loose.
When on the 15th of March 2009, the first batch of 20 boys were deployed at BSCPL Indore project site, Jaipal was surprised at the end of the first day itself that the rate of wastage was 80% lower than when casual labour was employed and at the end of the first week itself, the figure of wastage was close to zero, something never seen till then. Also the productivity of the boys at the end of first week was around 200 Kgs per day. These young boys were not looking to make a fast buck and run away, but were here to stay. They had stars in their eyes to learn more and more functions and never held back from taking up new responsibilities.
Jaipal was amazed when the batch of 20 completed a minor bridge only in one week and started working on a major bridge with the same vigour. He was in for a surprise when his management commended the performance of his department at the end of the first quarter when the new team trained and deployed by PTVPL was absorbed in to the workforce. Now Jaipal was the cynosure of all eyes in the company. Other Supervisors wanted to talk to PTVPL and deploy labor trained by PTVPL in their own departments. PREVIOUS.    NEXT.
